Professor Tatiana KOLOVOU & Dr. Rod HAVRILUK join the Advisory Team of Hellenic Aquatics

Professor Tatiana Kolovou came to the United States as an “academic immigrant” from Athens, Greece. She’s a faculty member at top-ranked Kelley School of Business at Indiana University, where she teaches business communication and cross-cultural effectiveness. Tatiana consults with executives and teams at large companies to develop effective communication skills for the global enterprise. In addition to her MBA academic training, Tatiana holds a Bachelors Degree in Exercise Science having worked alongside the legendary father of swimming biomechanics, Doc Counsilman (Coach of the renowned Mark SPITZ). On a personal level Tatiana is a Masters swimmer and triathlete having competed at a high level of age group competition in the 2010 World Triathlon Championships in Budapest, Hungary. Her vast Athletic and Academic experience will be extremely valuable in advising Hellenic Aquatics in Academic and Swimming matters.
Dr. Rod HAVRILUK
Internationally recognized expert on Swimming Technique – Sport Scientist – Inventor – Author
Dr. Rod Havriluk joins the Advisory Team of Hellenic Aquatics. His un-paralleled scientific credentials and substantial research, complemented by his vast experience in working with swimmers of all levels and ages (from Olympians to Elite Juniors), will help to enrich the Athletic and Academic aspects of Hellenic Aquatics and its members. Just last March D. Havriluk conducted the 1st Swim Technology Program organized by Hellenic Aquatics in Athens Greece.
Havriluk earned his Ph.D. in human performance from Indiana University in 1987. He specialized in biomechanics under the direction of Dr. John M. Cooper (widely recognized as “the father of modern biomechanics”). While at Indiana, he also studied under the legendary Dr. James “Doc” Counsilman, a renowned figure in American swimming (Coach of Mark SPITZ). Havriluk also has an M.S. in exercise physiology from Florida State University. He taught biomechanics at Indiana University and was most recently an adjunct professor at both Florida State University and Thomas University.
He is a long-time member of the American Alliance of Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance; the American College of Sports Medicine; and the American Swimming Coaches Association. He is currently serves on the educational committee of the International Swimming Coaches Association, the advisory board for the Counsilman Center for the Science of Swimming, the editorial board for the Journal of Swimming Research, and the review boards of numerous sport science journals.
Havriluk’s research is focused on three primary areas: improving technique, preventing/rehabbing shoulder injuries, and accelerating skill learning. His research produced three US patents and prompted the development of software and hardware products, including Aquanex+Video (selected as a finalist for Product Design and Development’s 2003 Engineering Awards), and MONA (a biomechanical model of optimal technique).
Havriluk’s research collaborations include working with colleagues at the University of Illinois, Indiana University, Florida State University, the University of Hawaii, Southwestern University and the University of Grenada (Spain). He has presented his research findings at many international conferences, including: IOC, FINA, ISCA, USA Swimming, American College of Sports Medicine, and Biomechanics and Medicine in Swimming. He has conducted clinics in the Caribbean, Asia, Australia, Europe, the Middle East, and North and South America. He has worked with thousands of swimmers and triathletes, including world record holders and Olympians from many countries.
Havriluk is widely published. His articles have appeared in Swimming World; American Swimming Magazine; Swimming in Australia; Journal of Swimming Research; Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport; Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise; and Biomechanics and Medicine in Swimming. He has developed instructional materials for swimmers and coaches and is currently collaborating with coach associations to develop a certification program.
